A day off?

The days after my long runs are USUALLY my off days, which is what I fully intended Sunday to be.  Even on days when I am taking off from running, I still like to do something active. Yesterday, I intended to just walk on the treadmill an read a bit of the book I have been pretty wrapped up in. I had been walking for 45 minutes and was pretty wrapped up in my book when a familiar face stopped in front of my treadmill. It was one of my "gym friends". A self-explanatory title someone who I regularly bump into at the gym. Duh... He asked how my long run went yesterday and if I was on a recovery run today or just walking.I reported that it had gone smoothly, minus watching the clock tick over half of the run, and I was nearly finished walking and reading. I hadn't planned on running at all, but my legs felt good and I had the time to log a few miles in before heading over to a girlfriend's house for the Packer game. Right as he was walking away my machine started it's cool down. The timing could not have been more perfect. Inspired, I tied back my hair and started the treadmill back up for a run. Six miles later, I felt great and was ready for some delicious snacky food that the game was sure to bring. I had made hot jalapeno corn dip to bring. Seriously addicting stuff and just happened to be super festive! Hello! GREEN AND GOLD! My Sunday ended up much better than imagined. I got six miles in, a quick lifting session AND the Packers beat the Bears. What more could a girl want??

Monday, Monday, Monday. A serious case of the Mondays. I think I am just going to blame it on the ridiculously cold weather. When it's actually -4 degrees and feels like -15 even walking out to your car in the driveway is enough to take your breath away. A hot power hour of yoga was exactly what I needed. Yoga always helps me relax and leaves me feeling refocused. Add a 93 degree room to that and I am in my own balmy paradise. I seriously recommend that anyone and everyone try yoga. There are so many different kinds of yoga that there is something for everyone. Hot yoga isn't everyone's cup of tea, but maybe slow flow yoga is more your speed. There are so many things that yoga can do for you!

LIKE....

  • Stress relief
  • Flexibility
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved energy
  • Increased strength, balance and coordination
  • Weight management
  • Improved breathing
  • Personal calm-ness

Just to name a few!!!! With all the benefits, physical and mental alike, yoga brings you there is no reason not to be open minded and give it a shot. Ok so maybe diving straight into a studio packed full of hard core yogi's is intimidating. I get that. I felt like a complete fool during my first class. Thankfully I had my sister by my side to brave it with me. There are beginner classes and community classes that are specifically targeted to people who are just starting out in their yoga careers. Be brave and try a few yoga classes, don't give up if the first one was not your thing. Every instructor and class are very different so it's all about finding a good fit for you!

A seriously important part of training is giving your body the adequate rest and time to recoup from hard days. That is exactly why after my fabulous yoga session today, I am surrounding myself with some of my favorites!

A glass of bubbly moscato! Notice the running shirt from the 15k Noodleini race my Dad, Sister and I ran just after Thanksgiving break....completely unplanned, but actually just a comfy shirt.

One of my all time favorite movies Alice in Wonderland and a hand full of Rolos! YUMM Give me some chocolate or "OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!!"

A brand new Apple Cinnamon candle on my new candle/coffee mug warmer! Santa was good to me :)

Cozy and content for tonight! Best~

12 "glorious" miles

And so it begins again. The long runs and the training. Ok so for my race in May I am technically still in the "pre-training" stage I guess, but a long run is a long run.

Today I logged 12 glorious, wonderful, perfect miles! I didn't even sweat! Obviously this is a bold faced lie. I did run my 12 miles though. As for them being "glorious, wonderful or perfect" well I finished them right? As I hopped out to my car this morning to head to the gym, I realized that it actually a nice day outside. A heat wave of 30 degrees. 30 degrees above zero. When you live in Wisconsin it becomes necessary to clarify that. BRR! Still, I made my way to the gym. First mistake. I should have taken advantage of the beautiful SUNNY weather. It's a rarity that we have weather like this in the middle of winter and days when you can run outside really help break up the long season of "treadmill-ing" But I was already on my way and had other things to do this afternoon so I didn't have time to go back and map out a 12 mile route. That and I really wanted to get my long run done today so it wouldn't be looming over my head to finish tomorrow. Come on there's a Packer game tomorrow! AND Aaron Rodgers is playing again! Seeing as we basically had the same injury I feel like he needs my personal support more than ever. Or I just want to watch the game with friends... Either way I had my cute running top on so to the treadmills I went. I even snagged one of the coveted "long distance treadmills". These bad boys won't shut off after the typical 45 minutes, they will run for 99 minutes PLUS a cool down! Its like a dream come true not having it shut off halfway through your run just to turn it back on. Hang on little treadmill, we still have unfinished business! The first half of my run went by quickly. That is until I made the mistake of looking at the clock and then the time on my treadmill. This is something that I hate doing! Once I have made the connection between how long I have left running and what time it is, there is no going back. I think I literally watched each of those last 45 minutes tick by. Not even the seven TVs in front of me, plus my personal TV on my treadmill could distract me for more than a few minutes. It was at this point in my run that I was kicking myself for not running outside. There have been very few of my runs outside that I am counting minutes. Either way thanks to the help of some good songs I polished off the last half of my run. Shout out to my girl Ke$ha! TIMBER!

Anytime I finish running I always follow it up with 20 push-ups. This is my way of drawing some of the blood that for the past however many miles has been sent basically to my legs back up to other parts, aka my arms :). Plus you look pretty tough hopping off the treadmill after a 12 mile run and cranking out 20 military push ups. Don't mess with this girl! Not only can I run but I can do push ups, too! After some stretching, I changed out of my running shoes, another favorite moment of training! During my stop on the way home from the gym I naturally ran into some high school classmates because that's just who you want to see right after running for 90+ minutes... So I finally made it home safely, took a glorious shower and began to experience what my sister has termed as "rungry". This feeling of intense hunger is what you experience after a long run. It is a serious condition that needs to be addressed right away! With lots of scrumptious food especially DESSERTS! Hello the purpose of the run in the first place ;) After my post-run feast of Christmas left-overs, I plopped myself onto the couch to catch a mid day movie and kick up my feet.

The last thing that happens after long runs that I forgot is how insanely cold I get. It's like there is nothing I can do to get warm! You can see why this might be an issue in a drafty, old college house but in my cozy living room at home this should NOT be an issue. So naturally I did what any resourceful college graduate would do, I put my parka that was sitting in the kitchen and snuggled up with another blanket for a post-run nap!

From under my plies of blankets, still a little chilled, and with my plate of Christmas treats, can't let that "rungry" sneak up again, I leave you the first documented "running adventure" :)

Here goes nothin'

After graduating college and completely losing all direction in life... just kidding.. I decided that I need a new challenge. So, as the title says "Here goes nothin'". Seriously though.... I have never been much a of a writer and I am COMPLETELY out of my element, bear with me as I navigate my way though this foreign world of blogging. But, I have a lot of thoughts and being a bit of fitness guru I thought "Hey! Why not write a blog about my running adventures?". I find people are always asking me about running. Like I am some sort of expert.... HA! As if! I just happen to be a freak of nature and really, REALLY like to run.

No big deal, just graduating college.
Here are some basics about me. My name is Meridith, I am a 22 year old marathon runner from the, currently, frozen state of Wisconsin. I am a coffee addict, I actually have 11 open bags of different coffee in my freezer. Yes, I did just go count. Desserts are one of my greatest weaknesses (hence all of the running). Being a health nut I TRY to find ways to make them healthy-ish but sometimes you just have screw it and treat yourself to the good stuff!  I have been a vegetarian for the past five years and counting. Finding new recipes and ways to cook meals is something I love doing.  I have newly discovered how wonderful candles can make life. That and a good Pandora station. Gotta set the mood people! My most productive time is really, really late at night, which is very unfortunate for my sleep schedule. But that's what the coffee is for right? Well, that and yoga. Hot yoga and a grueling Pilates session are two things that I just could not live without.  Being from Wisconsin and our beautiful four seasons I love spending time outdoors. Water sports, hiking, reading, you name it, I love it.

Being outdoorsy hiking with some girlfriends.
This brings me to how I started my running adventures. One fateful Saturday, my senior year of high school now *gasp* five years ago, I decided to tag along with my Dad on his morning run. My Dad is a killer triathlete, one of the most modest people I have ever met. You would never guess he wins his age group in nearly every race he competes in. The man is in incredible shape so it's no surprise he left me in the dust.  Let's just say at the end of that three and a half mile run I was laying on my back whimpering for my mom to bring me water. Fast forward three years of casual running, the longest I had ever run was maybe ten miles. My Sister calls me and tells me we are going to run a marathon and finish and Ironman. I laughed in her face, via phone of course.  I am all about running and I wouldn't mind the swimming but there is no way you will ever find me on a bike for 112 miles. EVER. Especially after my little spill this summer.  I earned a big, beautiful, new scar gracefully dismounting my bike after a run in, literally, with the curb. Eight screws and one very large plate later I have a will not set off metal detectors at the airport. Whoo hoo!

If you're going to break your collar bone you need to do it right, into 5 pieces. This way they'll have to cut off your favorite running top and you won't be able to shower for a few days after emergency surgery!
She and I signed up for the Green Bay Marathon that May. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done. It ended up being incredibly hot that day. The race ended was black flagged halfway through (the flag color describes the conditions of the race, green, yellow, red and finally black which means the race is cancelled due to extreme/unsafe conditions). The fire department and ERs were over loaded with runners who had fallen to the heat and demands of the race. I was at mile 18 when it was officially cancelled but thanks to the colorful words of a woman behind me about it "not being that hot" I carefully continued the race. I can honestly say crossing that finish line was one of the most rewarding moments in my life so far. I had trained my bum off to get where I was and no one could take that moment away from me. I was lucky enough to get to share that day with my sister who pushed through the heat and cramping to finish her race. My dad, being in the incredible shape he is in, actually ran the last TEN miles with her to let her finish the day on her own! Talk about a cool dad!!!

My Mom makes the greatest signs ;) Yes Mom, we did it!

The next and most recent marathon I ran was the Fox Cities Marathon. I trained for this one virtually on my own. Very different from my last training which I was so blessed to have a running group of experienced women to help me navigate the waters of marathon training. This time around was a little different, I wanted to beat me time from the last race. I had an ambitious goal in the back of my mind. I wanted what every marathon runner wants. The thing we all run for, what drives us to get better. I wanted Boston. I needed to beat a 3:35:00 to get there. I told myself that if it didn't happen during this race I had my whole life to get this goal and to listen to my body on race day. I started out with a pace group running a 3:30. This way I had a 5 minute cushion if I couldn't keep up with them. Starting off I honestly didn't think I would be able to make it. But I had the best cheering section, period. My mom, older sister and best friend were following me and along the course I saw them 13 times. Unheard of. Do that math, that's nearly every 2 miles. The people in the pace group asked if I was a local celebratory or something. HA! With all of the odds in my favor I finished my second marathon with a PR of 3:27:29!!!!

Running tip: Always smile at the photographers. But seriously, you never know they might use your picture for their marketing campaign!
even if this is how you're REALLY feeling ;)
but be HAPPY because you made it!!

Now I had qualified for Boston but was it calling my name? 2013 was too soon for me to get all my affairs in order to make it there and being a full-time student it didn't seem feasible to make it out there BUT 2014??? The registration opened very shortly after my bike "incident" and I decided what with not knowing what my future would be aka would my post-graduation plans allow for me to take the time off to travel and run the race? Also would I be healthy enough to run it? But the underlying question is after taking all this time off of running would I WANT to run another marathon again? Taking all of these into consideration I decided that I was not going to sign up  for the race and I would go from there. Immediately following the closing of registration, I regretted my decision. Now I am using this as my motivation to qualify for Boston again. This time I will be healthier and certain that this is what I want to do!
ALL that leads me to now where I am now. I am currently getting back into "running mode" and starting to train for another marathon this spring. I'll be tracking my training and all that comes along with it. Including but not limited to, rants and raves about runs, new recipes I'm trying, training tips and some random thoughts that I feel the need to share. So I leave you with all of this really long first blog post! Welcome to Running for Desserts :) Cheers!!!!
